Не происходит ли забвение из того, что «Я – это другой», назовем ли мы друговость себя жертвоприношением, вытеснением, возвращением вытесненного или даже просто театром субъективности? Если так, то этот другой, при том что признаем мы его всегда слишком поздно – если вообще признаем, – наделяет нас драматическим и вместе с тем достаточно бесполезным знанием: мы то, что мы потеряли (вытеснили, забыли, принесли в жертву). Или же мы то, что буквально только что – но все-таки еще до того, как началась наша история, – убежало от нас, вильнув хвостом, и никогда не вернется. Это забвение, которое постоянно преследует память. Она без устали крутится вокруг забытого. Она верна тому, чего нет. Само-отношение человеческого существа построено на этом парадоксе: несчастное животное, которое мы ретроактивным образом производим из собственного отчаяния, бесславно погибает до того, как мы успеем оправдать его предвкушение свободы. Свобода и знание это не одно и то же. Не связана она и с очеловечиванием животного. Если свобода – а не просто выход – это секретное слово Кафки, если оно пронизывает кафкианский секретный мир, не значит ли это, что свобода есть только там и больше нигде?

Драма совы Минервы в том, что она всегда прилетает слишком поздно. Как пишет Малабу, «в своем сумеречном дискурсе, в начале своей ночи, философия – это, может быть, не что иное как провозглашение истины: уже слишком поздно для будущего» ^[336]. Сова Минервы прилетает, чтобы обнаружить, что двери в terra utopia, где мы могли бы реализовать последнюю надежду отчаявшейся животности, уже закрыты, и на них написано:

Только животные не знают, что им запрещено входить в двери истины и что двери эти сделаны как раз для тех, кому вход в них запрещен. Для животных вообще не существует дверей, ворот, проходных. Где бы мы ни возвели стены и ни установили заграждения, звери пересекут их, как самые настоящие нелегалы, и найдут выход именно там, где, как нам кажется, его нет – а вместе с выходом найдут, возможно, и что-то еще.
