T-ГУРТ позволяет изменять зерновые так, что генетически улучшенный признак, внесенный в растения, не активируется до тех пор, пока они не будут обработаны специальными химикатами, продаваемыми компаниями, занимающимися биотехнологиями. Фермер не сможет использовать улучшение, если он не приобрел активирующий состав у владельца патентов на семена. Технология защищена на уровне отдельного признака – поэтому T-ГУРТ (прим.: t – trait – признак, свойство, особенность).

Технология рекомбинации ДНК – процедура «разрезания» и «сращивания» отдельной ДНК для создания новой комбинации генов.

Трансгенный – организм, который вследствие генной модификации в лаборатории содержит чужеродные гены. Связанные слова: трансген, трансгенезис.

Экспрессия (экспрессия генов) – процесс, в результате которого ДНК переписывается в «сообщение» (рибонуклеиновую кислоту, РНК), по которому затем создается полипептид или белок, дающий клетке определенные признаки и позволяющий выполнять определенные функции в организме.
