Как левое, так и правое крыло немецкого истеблишмента было довольно существованием ГДР, а в жизнеспособности государства сомневались лишь несколько воротил, которые действительно посещали страну. Юрген Хабермас может считаться типичным представителем поколения немецкой “критически настроенной” интеллигенции: он заметил, что что-то не в порядке, только в 1988 г. и даже тогда не заподозрил скорого конца другого германского государства. Он сказал Адаму Михнику: “Естественно, [падение стены] поразило меня, как и большинство немцев. Летом 1988 г. я впервые посетил ГДР, город Галле. Духовное состояние людей… было удручающим. Они были настроены цинично и доведены до отчаяния. Не оставалось никаких оптимистических перспектив. Теперь я понимаю, что заметил, насколько к тому времени износилась эта система. Но, конечно, я не ожидал конца”. (Die Zeit, 17 December 1993). Степень, в которой западногерманская элита отвергала диссидентов и перебежчиков, иллюстрируется тем, что даже после объединения бывшие коммунисты Стефан Гейм и Грегор Гизи сумели заблокировать участие бывшей диссидентки Фреи Клир в телепрограмме Talk im Turm, поскольку она привлекла внимание к тому, что Гизи в прошлом сотрудничал со Штази. В октябре 1989 г. Вацлав Гавел вспомнил, как холодно относилась западногерманская элита к диссидентам вроде него из опасений, что их критика может повредить атмосфере разрядки. И немцы были не в одиночестве. “Барон”-голлист Мишель Дебре назвал советское вторжение в Чехословакию “аварией на пути к разрядке”. Немецкие консерваторы тоже считали его расчисткой пути к разрядке!
