И последнее. Работая над этой книгой, я усвоил аналитическую, а временами легкомысленную интонацию, поскольку убежден, что вокруг этой темы слишком много пиетета и слишком мало понимания. Но я ни на секунду не забывал о реальности, стоящей за цифрами. Обозревать историю насилия — значит беспрерывно ужасаться жестокости и бессмысленности происходящего, и временами меня переполняли гнев, отвращение и безмерная тоска. За сухими графиками я воочию вижу юношу, которого накрывает волна боли, и он чувствует, как жизнь медленно покидает его, и понимает, что у него отняли десятилетия бытия. Я вижу жертву пыток — невыносимая агония вытеснила из ее сознания все мысли и желания, кроме одного: чтобы само сознание наконец угасло. Я вижу женщину, узнавшую, что ее муж, отец и братья лежат мертвые во рву, а сама она скоро «в руки попадет горячего и буйного насилья» ^[1952]. Было бы ужасно, если бы все эти бедствия выпали на долю одного человека или десяти, или сотни. Но речь идет не сотнях, не о тысячах и даже не о миллионах, а о сотнях миллионов — магнитуда, которую мозг отказывается принимать, с глубочайшим ужасом осознавая, сколько страданий причинила голая обезьяна своему собственному виду ^[1953].

Но между тем как наша планета продолжает вращаться согласно неизменным законам тяготения, наш вид отыскал и способы снизить эти цифры, что позволило все большему числу людей жить в мире и умирать от естественных причин ^[1954].
